Gardening Tools for People with Dementia

Watering can sprinkling plants with water.

Gardening is more than just a hobby and beneficial to everyone who’s willing to get their hands dirty. So here you’ll find some of the best gardening tools on the market to cater to the unique needs of those with dementia. We recognise that many of us may be unable to garden for health reasons already, but even a spot of light work planting seeds and tending to plants has a real positive impact on the mind, so why not give it a try?

Set of Three Garden Tools

Jardineer have developed a set of three garden tools that are really useful for light gardening – like planting flowers or re-potting plants. They come with some gloves that are light enough to still get a good grip with your hand in a natural position.

Durable Garden Kneeler

There are a few garden kneelers on the market but this seems to be one of the better made, more sturdy ones. It has a metal body which means it’s very durable, and the pads on either side don’t get dirty when you turn it upside down as they remain elevated above the ground. These are a real godsend in the garden!

Easyread Plant Pot Name tags

These wooden plant pot name tags make identifying plants and seeds really easy. They come with a high-contrast chalk marker and stick far enough out of the pots that they don’t get wet or rub off. Re-use them by rubbing off the writing with an alcohol-based wipe. (We’ve found hand sanitiser works for this purpose!)

Strong Pots with Saucers

Some cheaply-made pots aren’t very resistant to tough handling and break quite easily. These pots are lipped at the top for easy lifting and are durable and decorative enough to use indoors. They also come with matching saucers to catch any spills.

We hope you find some of our recommendations useful. We’ll be sure to add more to this list so make sure to check back at some point when the sun comes out!
